Single-Width Bubinga Tops // Curly Maple Bases // Single Drawer // Oil Finish // Custom Matching Pull //. Hand Scraped Surfaces // Boat Tail Top // Hand Formed Under Bevel
These concept pieces were created for a new line called "Galehead," inspired by Galehead Mountain in New Hampshire's Twin Range. The design offers a modern interpretation of traditional shaker proportions, aiming to blend elements of the modern American studio craft movement with the classic form without overshadowing its traditional roots.
Each detail of these pieces, from the hand-formed curves and surfaces to the legs' taper and shape, leads the eye to the arched skirts and boat-tail tops with striking spokeshaved under bevel. The skilled craftsmanship is evident in the subtle imperfections and delightful texture of the surfaces, reminiscent of the finely crafted furniture of past eras that inspired this design.
These exquisite forms come together to enhance the natural beauty and unique character of the highly figured tiger maple used for the base and bubinga used for the tops, complete with handmade matching bubinga drawer pulls. The bubinga employed in this collection is sourced from a carefully selected single-width board, chosen for its grain and color to narrate the ancient story of the remarkable tree, creating a contrast with the tones and figure of the figured maple. The finish consists of multiple meticulously applied coats of hand-rubbed oil, safeguarding and enhancing the wood's natural beauty while allowing its character to evolve and shine through generations of use.
